Trained as an obstetrician-gynecologist I later earned my PhD in Gynecologic Oncology from, Sweden. After a successful career in academic medicine in three continents, I embarked on international health where I have been an articulate advocate for reproductive health and rights for over two decades. I am strongly committed to community health, reproductive health, and actively participated in all the definitive RH conferences of our time: Safe Motherhood (Nairobi, 1987), ICPD (Cairo, 1994), Beijing (1995) and Safe Motherhood plus 10 (Colombo, 1999). I have served as a consultant to all major international development agencies.
I previously served on the FIGO Committee on Women's Sexual and Reproductive Right and represented KOGS in the FIGO Postgraduate Studies Committee at the Singapore Congress.
As Ipas Vice President for Africa and Global Affairs (1998-2000), I introduced MVA in Africa against formidable forces and built scale up program to implement Ipas's regional and global strategic vision to promote women's reproductive health and rights. I introduced MVA and spearheaded the expansion of its use in Africa, especially in the hands of nurses.
In Kenya, I have a been strong and forthright leader in all matters of health care and human reproduction for over three decades: I am past President of the Kenya Medical Association (4 years), President of Kenya Cancer Society (8 years), Chairman of Kenya's National Council for Population and Development. I led the Kenya Obstetrical and Gynecological Society for many years. I have recently catalyzed the formation of the East, Central and Southern Africa College of Obstetricians and Gynecologist (ECSACOG) and proud to be the premier Foundation Fellow. During my tenure as President of KMA, I introduced local medical indemnity schemes, served on NHIF Board and created both the KMA Housing Scheme and SACCO.
I am the founder of the Centre for the Study of Adolescence in Nairobi. As well as the Nairobi Oncology Centre, the first specialist cancer care and advisory clinic in East Africa. I also founded African Institute for Health Innovation (AIHT) and Kisumu Health and Education Trust (KMET), KMET runs the single most extensive network of private providers of high quality, comprehensive reproductive health care in Africa and winner of the Margaret Sanger Award in 2004.
I am also a Rotarian (started the most rural Rotary club in my rural village - Sagam) and the founder of two innovative hospital programs in Kenya: Sagam Community Hospital in rural Siaya and the Nairobi Women's Hospital, in Kenya. The later is the only specialized hospital for women in East and central Africa, providing unique care for victims of gender-based violence and rape, as part of a comprehensive package of services. Sagam Community Hospital is home of The African Institute for Health Transformation (AIHT) that conducts cutting edge research on health innovations and runs an online Board accredited CME for health professionals. AIHT/Sagam established the first Emergency Room service in rural Africa focusing on quality emergency care, and, in collaboration with Harvard University, Massachussets General Hospital and Maseno University, created the first and only post graduate (MMed) program in Family and Emergency Medicine in the region. The first MMed class is graduating this year.
I have previously served on the Advisory Board of The David and Lucille Packard Foundation (Palo Alto, USA), Board of Directors of PATH (Seattle, USA), each for the maximum 9 years and on the Boards of IntraHealth (North Carolina, USA) and The Center for African Family Studies (CAFS). I also served my full term on the board of Regional Prevention of Maternal Mortality Network and was a founder member of WHO's Gender Advisory Group, serving the maximum six years. I was also a member of the Regional Task Force for Reproductive Health (WHO, UNFPA, UNICEF &WB) and the NEPAD Health Committee.
I am the First Ambassador and Chief Advisor to US-AHA (Federation of American Health Businesses in Africa)
I currently serve as the Lead Health Sector Specialist and Head of the Health in Africa Initiative, a private sector in health focused program of the World Bank Group. In this position, I have leveraged well over USD5 billion in new investments in the health sector in Africa. I have also led the reforms over 60 laws and regulations influencing ease of doing business and quality of care across Anglophone and Francophone Africa. Prior to that, I was Senior Advisor for Population and Reproductive Health at The World Bank for ten years.
I have published over one hundred and fifty peer reviewed paper, chapters and books. I have also presented papers and given speeches in over 200 global conferences and convocations.
I am a recipient of multiple awards and honors in the region and abroad, continue to pursue academia through numerous Adjunct Professorial appointments, lectures, supervision of post- graduate students and external examination in Universities in Africa, Europe and North America.
