Dr. Shamsah Sonawalla

Dr. Shamsah Sonawalla is a Consultant Psychiatrist at Jaslok Hospital and Research Center, Mumbai, former Assistant Professor ofPsychiatry, Harvard Medical School, USA and Duke University Medical Center, USA, and Founder, TransMag Well-Being Clinic, Mumbai.

Dr. Sonawalla is a practicing psychiatrist for over 20 years andhas worked extensively in this field across India and the United States. She obtained her M.D. degree in psychiatry from Mumbai University and received several awards for her academic and clinical work. She then completed her postdoctoral training in psychiatry at Harvard, was promoted to instructor in a year, and thereafter, to Assistant Professor of Psychiatry. At Harvard, she did pioneering work in the field of depression among college students (across India and the United States) and received several awards for the same, including the prestigious 'Young Investigator Award' in 2002 from the National Alliance for Research in Schizophrenia and Depression (NARSAD) and the 'New Investigator Award' from the New Clinical Drug Evaluation Unit (NCDEU). Her department at the Massachusetts General Hospital, Harvard Medical School was ranked number one department of psychiatry in the United States for21 consecutive years by U.S. News.

Dr. Sonawalla returned to India in 2002 and joined Jaslok Hospital and Research Centre as Honarary Consultant Psychiatrist. She set up the Women's Well-Being Clinic and Mood Disorders Clinicat Jaslok, and helped establish the Clinical Research departmentin psychiatry.She was awarded the "Distinguished Alumnus Award" by Jai Hind College in 2005. She further specialized in Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (rTMS) for psychiatric disorders at Harvard in 2008 and started "Trans Mag Well-Being Clinic" in Mumbai in 2010. She has successfully treated several individuals with mood and anxiety disorders using rTMS.

Dr. Sonawalla has over 100 research publications to her credit in national and international journals. She co-edited a book at Harvard on 'Women's Health and Psychiatry,' published in 2002 by Lippincott, Williams and Wilkins and has also authored several book chapters.

Dr. Sonawallahas also spoken extensively globally, with over 150 lectures, panel discussions, workshops and symposia on Mental Health issues. She is an invited columnist for the Times of India and the Economic Times and writes regularly on mental health issues. She has been cited in various newspapers and magazines across India and the United States.She continues her research on depression among college students, and has helped several thousand college students overcome depression. She also continues to retain her collaboration with Harvard, updating and expanding her research and clinical acumen.

In February 2019, Dr. Sonawalla was an awardee of the prestigious "50 Top Global Mental Health Leaders" by ET Nowat the World Mental Health Congress in Mumbai.
