Academic Achievement.
Dr. R. Deshpande obtained his basic training in medicine and surgery from the Karnataka Medical College Hubli from Dharwad University and Surgical Training from the Country's Premier Cancer Institute- Tata Memorial Hospital Mumbai with a rank in Mumbai University for the MS examination.

Thereafter he was trained at the Sloan Kettering Cancer Center at New York as well as the Royal Marsden Cancer Center in London in danced Cancer Surgery techniques for short durations.

Advanced Training in Singapore He also obtained advanced training in Thoracoscopic Surgery at the Singapore University Hospital. He is the first Onco-Surgeon to start Thoracoscopy on diagnostic and therapeutic basis in the country.

Pioneer for Thoracoscopic surgery in India He has conducted thoracoscopic workshops for training Pulmonologists and Onco-surgeons in Mumbai and Bangalore. He set-up the thoracoscopy surgical program at the Kidwai Institute of Oncology at Bangalore in 1983 and at the Tata Memorial Hospital in 2000.

Pioneer for new techniques in India He has successfully developed the surgeries for upper third esophageal cancers in India- a pioneering technique hitherto un-reported in world literature.

Invited as International Faculty He has been invited as guest speaker, participated in panel discussions, presentations, lectures, symposia in various international Cancer Conferences from 1990 till date.

Invited as National Faculty He has also been invited to deliver lectures, participate in symposia, panel discussions in over a hundred national conferences till date from 1982 onwards. He has been organizing secretary for National Oncologists conference in Bangalore.

He was Assistant Professor of Surgical Oncology at the Kidwai Institute of Oncology at Bangalore from 1982 to 1985. He was on the staff of the Tata Memorial Hospital from 1985 to 2002 when he withdrew as the Chief of Thoracic and In 2002, along with the Country's leading names in Oncology, he set up the Asian Institute of Oncology, which functions currently our of the Somaiya Ayurvihar and is the Executive Vice Chairman of the facility.

Publications
He has over 56 publications in National and International peer reviewed journals and is author of chapters of management of Lung Cancer and Esophageal Cancer in Text Book of Cancer published by National Book Trust in 2002 and on Chapters on Lung Cancer, Mediastinal Tumors and Chest wall tumors in the forthcoming "Perspectives in Cancer" under publication.

Presently he is the Promoter and the Executive Vice Chairman of the Somaiya Ayurvihar Asian Institute of Oncology, a project conceived by a group of Oncologists who were previously attached to the Tata Memorial Hospital.
