Chitwan Malhotra

Director of Environment Health, NCDs and Sports

A Women Representative among Business leaders in the world, Ms Chitwan Malhotra has served as an advisor for the UN Sustainable Development Goal 6 on Sanitation and Environmental Health, dealing in particular with urbanisation and climate change. Her experience covers a range of sustainable development issues, including global health delivery, sanitation and clean drinking water, gender equality, women's health, NCDs and Mental health in conflict regions. She has been awarded the prestigious Environment Award for her sanitation and clean drinking water initiatives in rural regions of Africa and India.

Chitwan Malhotra is driving and strengthening the areas of health diplomacy, strategic engagement, and partnerships in Geneva. Her time as an advisor for the UN SDG Goals involved collaboration with a wide range of partners, including the various UN agencies and Cooperation Missions in India, Africa and the United Nations Office in Geneva.

Chitwan Malhotra is most recently serving as the Director of Environment Health, NCDs and Sports for the UNSDG Health Partnership in Geneva where she is responsible for initiatives supporting national and regional civil society to drive improvements in NCD prevention and control, promote sports as a means to combat growing lifestyle diseases among youth and environmental health. She oversees the drug access, vaccines and pharmaceuticals supplies at affordable prices in low and lower middle income countries. In Africa, particularly in Zimbabwe, on behalf of the Ministry of Health she led successful price negotiations with pharmaceutical companies to lower the price of medicines and vaccinations to provide prevention and care for the poorest billion.

She recently led a high level discussion on the global healthcare delivery to achieve Universal Health Coverage for all in the United Nations Office in Geneva during the 74th WHO Annual World Health Assembly in Geneva with Zimbabwe, The Gambia and Namibia as country partners.

Chitwan is specialised in NCD prevention and health promotion, particularly looking at social, commercial and environmental determinants of health, and leads UNSDG prevention policy and advocacy work stream, with particular focus on alcohol control, physical activity, nutrition and cross risk factor issues. In collaborations with the International Olympic Committee in Lausanne, UEFA France, government stakeholders and civil society leadership and NGOs she oversees Multi million Multi country capacity building initiatives to strengthen the "Sports as a tool to combat NCDs" movement in regions with high NCDs related mortality rates. Her efforts led to the rollout of the "Healthy Cities Challenge 2020 initiative".

Chitwan, most recently has been appointed as the Chairman of the India Africa Health Partnership council jointly supported by the UNSDG Health Partnership in Geneva and Assocham India. Chitwan's work is now focused on international health cooperation, and she has been assigned a new role to lead a number of health committees and programmes, working closely with international partners. As part of this work, she will oversee the development of the India Africa health cooperation process, she will initiate health cooperation with BRICS countries, and she will engage in regional health cooperation with Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) while continuing to also serve as the Director of Environment Health in Geneva.
